Recycling is one of the most important methods of preservation and protection for our planet and its natural resources; recycling saves over 700 million tonnes of CO2 emissions which is expected to increase to 1 billion tonnes by 2030. The more CO2 emissions that are eliminated, the stronger the Earth’s ozone layer becomes, and the more natural resources are preserved. As such, in 2018, March 18th was officially named Global Recycling Day to both celebrate and recognize how important recycling is and the role it plays for assisting in the future of our planet. The primary two-part mission of Global Recycling Day is to acknowledge to world leaders that a cohesive and joined approach to recycling is urgently needed, and to ask those around the world to think of recyclable items as a resource as opposed to simply other forms of waste. Until these goals are achieved, recycled goods won’t be seen at their full value.
To put forth the importance of Global Recycling Day, and recycling in general, into perspective, since the industrial production of synthetic materials began in the 1950s, more than eight billion metric tonnes of plastic has been produced. More than 75% of these plastics have become a form of plastic waste and, of that 75%, only 9% has actually been recycled. That means that the remaining amount is left either sitting in a landfill or has become litter scattered around the natural environment. If these plastic items were to be gathered and diverted away from landfills, it would greatly assist with environmental stability by removing these items with very slow breakdown timeframes from natural ecosystems. It would also reduce the need for farming the natural resources that are required to produce plastics which would create a positive trickle down effect; recycling helps conserve these natural resources and saves energy while also reducing pollution and minimizing the waste that is sent to landfills.
How do we here at Busch Systems come into this? The recycling movement got its start with the first curbside recycling program implemented in 1983 in Kitchener, Ontario. Busch Systems founder and CEO Craig Busch, a then student at York University in Toronto, recognized that the program could be improved and, in 1985, Busch Systems was born! With a focus on recycling, Craig continued to grow Busch Systems further and, by 1990, half of the blue boxes used in Canada was supplied by Busch Systems! The business continued to grow further, and evolve, in order to truly put forward a dedication into the importance of recycling by innovating and developing new products to help with proper sorting methods, proper engagements, and education; after all, our methods of Innovative Designs Inspiring Change is much more than just a tagline, it is our goal here to constantly move forward and improve any way we can to help with recycling goals, and improve further work toward global recycling goals. So, Happy Global Recycling Day 2025 and remember to think before disposing!
