Barrie, ON – June 23, 2010 – Later this month the City of Barrie will be launching a new recycling initiative for multi-residential buildings. The program will feature the Busch Systems ‘Multi-Recycler’. The goal of the program is to increase the multi-residential sector’s diversion rate by 15%. The new recycling bins will be handed out to over 200 apartment buildings, multi-residential complexes and condominiums in the city.
The Busch Systems ‘Multi-Recycler’ is a lightweight container which features user friendly slanted insertion slots that simplify separation and collection. The space efficient bin can be stacked to form a sleek recycling station, as well as, custom stamped with logos or recycling program messages. Each unit effectively collects over 6 gallons of sorted recycles or waste.
The City of Barrie will be handing out 10,000 blue ‘Multi-Recyclers’ over the course of the summer and fall. The hope is that the
recycling bin design will make it easier for Barrie multi-residential dwellers to recycle and increase their multi-residential diversion rates from 20% in 2010 to 35% in 2011.
The ‘Multi-Recycler’ is fitted with handles which make it easier for people to carry out to larger outdoor carts for emptying and collection. Currently residents carry their recyclables out in plastic bags or anything else that is handy. The new recycling bins will make it easier to properly sort recyclables and reduce contamination rates.
According to Tracy Quann-Strasser, the city’s waste reduction coordinator, “The bin will be a reminder (to recycle) in apartments.” On June 23, at Victoria Village, an Open House for superintendents, property managers and building owners is being held to showcase the “in-unit boxes” and the new literature that has also been developed under this initiative.
