Webinar: How Data Analytics is Transforming Waste Collections and Recovery

Original air date: May 26, 2021 at 12:00pm EDT

Description:

Even as data analytics have transformed fields as diverse as policing and energy management, the waste and recycling industry has been slow to follow suit. The challenges to tracking and using accurate data contribute to systematic inefficiencies, difficulties benchmarking performance and a lack of transparency around costs. This situation has started to change in the last decade as new technologies have begun shedding light on how waste material moves from the point of generation to the point of disposal or recovery. This webinar features a panel of industry experts discussing how analytics can be used to improve waste collections and increase material recovery.

Additional Resources:

  • The following are examples of sample RFP language that can used to require waste hauler reporting:
    • Sample language requiring use of sensors (from Sensoneo):
SENSORS. Hauler acknowledges that Sensoneo is a manufacturer and provider of proprietary sensor technology for use in waste and recycling containers. Hauler further acknowledges that the sensors are affixed to equipment by drilling holes into the equipment. Hauler consents to such drilling, and hereby allows for the installation of Sensoneo sensors into Hauler’s container assets at client locations. Client and Sensoneo shall be financially responsible for costs directly related to the installation of Sensors. Hauler shall not relocate equipment with installed sensors or remove any sensors from the equipment without client’s consent and shall indemnify client for any and all cost and expense associated with damaged or lost sensors if such action is done without the consent of client. Client holds Hauler harmless from costs incurred directly related to the installation of Sensoneo sensors, including any Property Damage and/or injuries that occur while work is being performed on equipment owned by Hauler.”
    • General language about tracking and reporting collection data
MEASUREMENT AND REPORTING: Provide a plan to measure ABC University’s waste destined for off-site facilities, maintain accurate records of weights and volumes from each specific pick-up location using an onboard tracking system. Describe how Bidder will report specific weights of materials from each building electronically in a format that may be accessed by ABC University online at any time. Access must include multiple views and rollups of data, but minimally will offer daily, monthly, and year-to-date viewing options by building and subsets of buildings to be determined by ABC University. All data must also be easily accessible for downloading by ABC University into Microsoft Excel format. Provide examples of reporting capabilities. Provide monthly cost breakout for transportation and disposal fees (and any container rental fees if applicable) for each location (including roll off dumpsters used at move in/move out and for special projects) with each bill. The successful Bidder will be required to maintain third-party receipts, for the duration of the contract, showing weights of materials sold, resulting costs and revenues. ABC University maintains the right to review all such documentation.”
